Hunter S. Thompson shoots self in head
"Fear and Loathing" author dead at 67
http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~53~2723492,00.html

The godfather of gonzo says 9/11 caused a "nationwide nervous breakdown" -- and let the Bush crowd loot the country and savage American democracy.
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2003/02/03/thompson/index_np.html
"Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads?" he writes, referring to the people currently occupying the White House. "They are the racists and hate mongers among us -- they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis."

Rest in peace, Hunter. Thank you for everything. We're going to deal with this Gannon/Guckert/Whoever person, and then move down the line and deal with the rest of the whores. You died on the eve of the birth of a new journalism, populist in nature, beholden to the truth and thanking the Google gods every step of the way. I wish you had stuck around to see it, but I'll tell you all about it when we meet at that clearing at the end of the path. Until then...
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/022105Z.shtml
Hunter once wrote in 'The Great Shark Hunt' about walking in on two Secret Service agents sharing a joint back and forth in a hotel room. Maybe that's how Gannon/Guckert/Whoever got within pistol range of the leader of the free world. No other explanation seems to satisfy.
It comes down to this. The Bush crew has been caught in bed with the proverbial 'live boy.' Someone in that White House either eased Gannon/Guckert/Whoever through the 'hard pass' application process, which requires a thorough background check, or else smoothed the way for him to get day pass after day pass after day pass. Some complain that Gannon/Guckert/Whoever is being victimized for his political views. This misses the point. Someone let a working, advertising whore into the White House, and then was stupid enough to let him walk around alive and free after he blew his own cover. That's the point.
My hero died tonight. He was a flawed man, a maniac, in so many ways the antithesis of what a journalist is supposed to be. Worst of all, he told the truth. There is now one less warrior on this planet filled with Guckert clones, drones who get fed shit and regurgitate it wholesale for the masses because that is what we are trained to eat.

When the history of this era is written, people will wonder why we didn't challenge its excesses, why we didn't know the things we should have.

Bush administration blurs media boundary

First came video "news releases" produced by the Bush administration using a TV news format. Then came three conservative columnists who got big paychecks from federal agencies. Now, there's Jeff Gannon (not his real name), a journalist (maybe) who gained surprisingly easy access to the president, only to lob a sympathetically slanted question.

“A blog is still a view of the world through a pinhole,” he said, noting that it can sometimes fall as low as being a “one man circle jerk.”

There is nothing "faddish" about the collapse of vertically-structured institutional systems, and the emergence of horizontal networks of interconnected individuals. Centralized systems are rapidly becoming decentralized – a matter about which I have written before – producing a fundamental change in how people will organize themselves in society. Because of the Internet, the information-genie has escaped its institutional confines – where it has been controlled, manipulated, and hidden from view, in furtherance of institutional interests to monopolize the content of the minds of subjugated men and women.

Bush to Poor: Drop Dead
http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0219-21.htm
What surprises me most about Bush's new Budget Proposal is that the front gates of the White House aren't being knocked down by legions of outraged clergy armed with spiked bats and pitchforks and acetylene torches screaming for the head of any of the leering corporate lackeys possessing even the remotest of roles in submitting this moral crime against humanity to Congress.

Blame America? When necessary, yes
http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~155~2717811,00.html
As the Bush administration gears up for an invasion of Iran, Americans need to ask whether we can fight another pre-emptive war. To understand how wrong this doctrine really is, you need merely to reverse roles. Imagine that, in the face of all this saber-rattling, Iran decided to attack us pre-emptively. Would Americans shrug and say that it was legitimate for Iran to hit us first?
How many hundreds of billions will this war cost? Will the president give us an estimate beforehand or will he try to hide the costs as he's doing with the war in Iraq? Will American servicemen again be deployed for extended periods in a deadly conflict with vague goals and no exit strategy? How many of them will die fighting the president's pre-emptive wars?
How many more domestic programs will President Bush have to cut in order to finance the war? How much more debt will our nation take on in order to pay for it?

Outfoxed by bin Laden

Any day now, the neocons may orchestrate a scenario that will suck the U.S. into a wider war that America has no possibility of winning. If the American people had the slightest sense of their danger, they would demand immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and accountability for the liars who orchestrated the ill-fated U.S. invasion.

Chavez to suspend oil exports to US in case of assassination attempt
http://www.turkishpress.com/world/news.asp?id=050220214200.4meabf8e.xml
"If they kill me, there will be a really guilty party on this planet whose name is the president of the United States, George Bush," Chavez said.

According to the Bush administration, it is Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez’s desire to purchase weapons from Russia that threatens to destabilize the Andean region, not the $3 billion in military aid that Washington has provided to Colombia over the past five years. Likewise, in the Middle East, it is Syria’s efforts to obtain purely defensive anti-aircraft missiles that pose a threat to that region, not the $1 billion a year in U.S. military aid to Israel. And on the nuclear front, while there is no evidence that Iran is intending to build nuclear weapons, it is the regime in Tehran that is threatening to further destabilize the region, not President Bush’s apparent pledge to support any future Israeli attack against Iran. Meanwhile, North Korea’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in order to develop nuclear weapons makes the Asian nation a “rogue state,” but Washington’s abandonment of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM) to build its missile defense system, which could lead to the weaponization of space, apparently does not justify the same anti-multilateralist label being applied to the United States.
http://www.colombiajournal.org/colombia203.htm
The hypocrisy of the Bush administration is clearly evident in its targeting of alleged rogue states—Venezuela, Syria, Iran and North Korea—while supporting non-democratic and repressive regimes in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, among others. The Bush administration’s militaristic rhetoric and actions have not only resulted in increasing numbers of people around the globe viewing U.S. foreign policy as a significant destabilizing factor in international relations, it has also made clear exactly who is the world’s principle warmonger.

WHO IS SENDING YOUR CHILDREN OFF TO DIE IN WAR?
http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/offtowar.html
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has laid out the road map, with Iran, Libya and Syria next on the list: "These are irresponsible states, which must be disarmed of weapons mass destruction," he told visiting U.S. congressmen, "and a successful American move in Iraq as a model will make that easier to achieve."

Mass Firings - Sharon Fights To Prevent Military Coup
http://www.rense.com/general63/firdst.htm
PM Sharon is now scrambling to prevent another attempt at a coup d'etat. The top echelons of the IDF, Shabak and intelligence community have all reached the same conclusions: the planned Gaza withdrawal will be a security disaster. Once the withdrawal is over, Israel will no longer be able to secure its southern coastal flank. This will be the first step in the dismantling of the country.

Baiting a Trap for Bush?
http://www.antiwar.com/pat/?articleid=4894
No Arab nation has attacked the United States since the Barbary pirates, and none wants war with America. Only Osama, Sharon, and the neoconservatives look longingly to a "World War IV" and a "clash of civilizations" between America and Islam.

"Islamic extremists are exploiting the Iraqi conflict to recruit new anti-U.S. jihadists." He added, "These jihadists who survive will leave Iraq experienced and focus on acts of urban terrorism."
The war, said Mr. Goss, "has become a cause for extremists." In his view, "It may only be a matter of time before Al Qaeda or another group attempts to use chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons."
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/21/opinion/21herbert.html?hp&oref=login
What is also dismaying is the way in which the administration has taken every opportunity since Sept. 11, 2001, to utilize the lofty language of freedom, democracy and the rule of law while secretly pursuing policies that are both unjust and profoundly inhumane. It is the policy of the U.S. to deny due process of law to detainees at the scandalous interrogation camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where prisoners, many of whom have turned out to be innocent, are routinely treated in a cruel and degrading manner.

How Catholic conservatives got it wrong
http://commonwealmagazine.org/article.php?id_article=1032
Abu Ghraib presents a dilemma for Christian defenders of Bush’s “war” on terror. The argument that Abu Ghraib was just the work of “a few bad apples” might have convinced some, but it should give pause to theologians who spend so much time telling Americans how corrupted we have become because society has turned away from religious truth. I am sure George W. Bush meant what he said when he reacted to the photographs of tortured prisoners with “their treatment does not reflect the nature of the American people.” But you don’t have to spend much time reading First Things or other “orthodox” critics of secularism to wonder about that. Christian conservatives regularly tell us how “barbarian” and “nihilist” we as a culture have become. Over and over again we are told about how debased American sexual practices are. War has always created its own horrors, but when you add soldiers produced in a culture as debased as First Things thinks this one is, Abu Ghraib should be no surprise at all. Surely, when seen through the lens of the conservative Christian indictment of American culture, the events at Abu Ghraib must raise the question of whether America can produce soldiers capable of jus in bello.

An Iraqi whose corpse was photographed with grinning U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib died under CIA interrogation while in a position condemned by human rights groups as torture — suspended by his wrists, with his hands cuffed behind his back.

...in Bush’s New World Order, by February 7, 2005, seasoned journalist Jordan had already been driven from his newsroom -- permanently. So then the issue is not simply whether or not journalists are targeted in Iraq by American troops, which is still unresolved. Rather, today’s issue is that American journalists who open their mouths and don't follow some kind of ideological line are targeted at home. For a free and democratic society, that should be frightening.

Credible Evidence Emerges That Jeff Gannon Coordinated With the G.O.P. to Bring Down Former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) in 2004 Election
http://nashuaadvocate.blogspot.com/2005/02/credible-evidence-emerges-that-jeff.html

Despite the best efforts of the Corporate Media the Gannon Scandal kept rolling last week. Since last week's Idiots, a number of new stories have come to light. First, it was revealed that Gannon was in fact selling himself for sex online while he was a member of the White House press corps. Then it came out that Gannon was actually in the White House as early as February 28, 2003 - a month before Talon News even existed, which completely disproves White House press secretary Scott McClellan's recent statement that "[Gannon], like anyone else, showed that he was representing a news organization that published regularly, and so he was cleared two years ago to receive daily passes, just like many others are." (Maureen Dowd meanwhile revealed that White House press passes simply aren't that easy to come by.)http://www.democraticunderground.com/top10/05/187.html
There are two reasons why the Corporate Media is shying away from the Jeff Gannon scandal. The first is obvious: they're plain scared of getting scooped by a bunch of bloggers who have nothing but facts at their fingertips and a willingness to actually ask questions that people want the answers to. The second reason is more insidious: the Jeff Gannon story doesn't support "conventional wisdom," and if it doesn't support conventional wisdom then the Corporate Media doesn't want to know.
